As we begin the New Year, we are called to reexamine our lives. After the excitement and celebration of the Christmas season, melancholy can set in and turn ordinary days dull and grey. Yet as Christians, we are to be men and women of joy—no matter the weather, the season, or circumstances of life. Joy is a virtue (Aquinas) and a fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5:22). Joy radiates from the person who has experienced an authentic encounter with Jesus Christ. Joy attracts the person who is seeking truth, beauty, and light.
Through the month of January we will be highlighting sections of the Apostolic Exhortation, Evangelii Gaudium (The Joy of the Gospel), by Pope Francis. This engaging and challenging document reflects on our baptismal call to evangelization.
